About the Jurors:
Laura Pickett Calfee liked to take pictures as a child but gradually began a serious pursuit of photography in the late 1980s. Her first solo exhibitions were in 1995 and most recently at the Kohler Arts Center in Kohler, Wisconsin. Her ongoing (and long-going) project documenting the homes held by the same families for fifty years or more, Of A Place, has been exhibited in museums throughout Texas and galleries throughout the US and Europe.
She is the recipient of numerous awards including four awards from the International Photography Awards (the Lucies, 2006), Best of Show in the Governor’s Exhibition (1996) and was the recipient of an artist residency at Yaddo in 2008. In addition to photography, she is the co-author of Chick Tawk, a dance/theater piece performed at Dia Center for the Arts in New York.
Although principally self taught, she has studied with John Szarkowski, Larry Fink, Sam Abell and Duane Michals. She holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas and has served on the boards of the Texas Photographic Society and the Center for Women and Their Works in Austin, Texas.
